House on the Hill
Four volumes stepping down a mountain.
At 1,600 metres the weather does most of the design work. The house is broken into four volumes that step down the contour, each one turned slightly to catch a different view and to shelter the terrace below it from the prevailing wind.
A rough local limestone plinth grounds the house and absorbs the level changes. Above it the volumes are white concrete, deliberately lighter in tone so that in winter the building reads against the snow rather than into it.
Between the volumes are three outdoor rooms, each fully enclosed on two sides. In summer they are where the house is actually lived in.
